They Once Were Children Too

by Madelleine Müller

They look for ghosts behind the door
And always check underneath the floorboards

They lie awake and watch their gold
Scared to loose they always look over their shoulder

Shaky hands
Hearts
And lungs

Demand for
Things to last
And that they belong

They once were children too
They would play
They would cry
Run to mama
Asked why only birds could fly

They once were children too
They would lie
To touch the sky
Run to mama
Asked why heaven is too high

They’d sit on thrones and pace the floor
She spoke of loneliness and tomorrows

She begged for more, but he was stone-cold
He’d seen the footprints underneath his window

Shaky hands
Hearts
And lungs

Demand for
Things to last
And that they belong

They once were children too
They would play
They would cry
Run to mama
Asked why only birds could fly

They once were children too
They would lie
To touch the sky
Run to mama
Asked why heaven is too high
